heater control valve

I'm in the reassembly process, and I've come to something that I did not 
document by photographing or drawing when I took this car all apart five 
years ago.  The heater control valve!  The parts book shows it installed 
with the base of the valve toward the block and the tube coming off the side 
toward the heater core.  Is this correct?????  What is the length of the 
hose from the outside of the firewall to the base of the tube on the valve??
