I found a replacement for the rear hatch lift struts. I measured my one
good one and here are the specs:
compressed length = 12 in.
exetended length = 20 in.
force 40 lbs.
I took these specs to Napa and they have listings from 20 lbs on up. Some of
the part numbers are:
20lb - BK 819-5591
30lb - BK 819-5592
40lb - BK 819-5579
I bought the 20lb 1st and while they will hold the hatch open, they let it
drop too fast so I exchanged them for the 40lb. They work fine but the 30lb
may
be better because John at Bricklin Parts said they changed from gas to spring
sometime in '75 because the gas was too powerful. He was also concerned that
the connection to the hatch may not be strong enough.
On another note, is it just me or are the lift struts mounted backward from
what they should be? The ones on the trunk of my mustang are mounted with the
bottom of the strut farther away from the rear of the car than the top of the
strut. The Bricklin has them reversed which to me would seem to take more
force to open as well as not support the hatch when it's nearly closed.
