Dave,
I did a decent amount of research on this subject when I decided to convert
to overdrive. Personally, I wanted a 5 spd....but I was open to either as long
as it had overdirve.
I consulted with many guys on the AMC mailing list and it seems that it is
fairly difficult to find a good solution to attaching an auto tranny to an AMC.

First, I believe that this might work....but further research would be
needed. You can use a GM th400r4 (I think...camaros) or th200r4(grand
nationals). Then you need to get a spacer/adapter from a late 70's Full Size
Jeep (that had either the 360 or 401 with the th400 tranny. Something will
have to be done with the spacing (and the additional length....like torque
converter spacing bolts...or whatever). Then you have to figure out how to
wire up the lockup TC, the reverse lights. I dont think that you need a manual
valve body because I believe that these run off of pressure and not computer
controlled. YOu also have to figure out how to attach the throttle cable.
I got as far as owning the th200r4 and the spacer. Let me know if you want
to try it...I can sell you the th200r4 cheaply. Finding the spacer is not too
bad...but the rest will have to be rigged.
NOTE: this is not for the timid.

Second, you can rebuild the 727 with a wider ratio/lower first gear, and
then increase the gearing in the rear to give better cruising RPM.

Third, I belive that you can buy an OD unit that attaches to the 727...but I
dont know much about it.

Fourth, You can bolt up a T-5 like me (lots of rigging for the pedals and
linkage/hydraulic clutch). And if you want something stronger...you get a
Tremec 3550 (I got one now and it will go in when I toast my T-5...which might
not be long with the nice 401...).

Fifth, I think that there is another option....but I cant remeber it to
write it to you guys.

Now....somebody come finish my car so that I can make it to the NJ meet.

Jamie
