Need crossover for 74 Brick starter

I got a rebuild kit for a starter for a 74 amc 360 but the Bendix is too 
short by at least an inch -- the other parts fit.  Was there a difference 
for 4 speeds v. autos, or anyone know which starter to use? Thanks, Kim.
