Actually, there is an outfit in Florida that says it can readily make up any
condenser IF they have an old one to go by. They can also repair/rebuild
filter driers. Don't expect a big bargain here, but their prices were not
outrageous either. As for high pressures, the R-12 does not run a
particularly high head pressure, in fact, lower than R-134 by far. These
coils can be repaired by an artful brazer. The stock condenser actually
uses a rectangular tube construction, not for the timid.
The company is in Tampa Bay, Classic Auto Air, the guy's name is Art,
and he is quickly gaining knowledge about the Bricklin. This outfit
specializes in classic autos. They have a great Sanden retrofit which
really does go in quite easily and requires some new fittings, including one
oddball because of an incorrectly sized OEM lo side hose. But talk about
cleaning up under the hood! You can even get the Sanden polished for an
xtra $50. They can also supply the OEM style compressor and clutch if
desired. We are still working together (slowly) to determine an evap fan
motor that spins faster in the correct rotation. The problem is that
manufacturers of these small motors do not readily list rpms! But if this
issue can be resolved, it means the Bricklin can have an A/C system
comparable with today's cars higher output meat freezers. The retrofit and
OEM styles are available in R-134 or R-12. Although there is some
controversy, I firmly believe an R conversion is not the way to go if you
live in warmer climates unless you want to redo the entire system INCLUDING
the evap fan motor. Finally, while there are always composite Rs coming out
making great claims, their acceptance into the field has been very limited.
