Thanks to all for the information and suggestions. I've ordered a *new*
sender
from Bob's Brickyard, $87, C.O.D. When I pulled the old one I found the
float to be a plastic bottle attached to the arm with zip ties. I guess
someone
should be commended for their innovation but I think I would have repaired
the
original float. Anyway, the plastic bottle was full of fuel. The sender is
working fine and the filter looks good. I'll keep the old one as a spare.

While doing research, I came across several different part numbers but
none could be crossed by my local auto stores. However, one store gave me
some good options. First, they said to bring the old one in and maybe they
can match it up. Second, they said if they can't match it, they may have a
generic replacement. Finally, they said they can send mine out for a
rebuild
with only a two day turn around. I thought the last option was good to know
for future reference.

I did pull the sender without dropping the tank as someone suggested; pretty
easy. However, I'm a little concerned the old float is still in the tank
and
I'm also a little curious about what the tank looks like inside. I doubt
the old
float can do any harm if it's in there but, I'm the kind of person that has
to
know. That said, I'm going to go ahead and pull the tank and do an
inspection.
I'll be able to correct any other problems like rust or water or
who-knows-what.

And, while I'm under the car, I'm replacing the 5/16" rubber fuel line
between
the tank and the fuel and vent lines. An easy job and worth the peace of
mind.
If the new sender does not come with a new sealing O-ring, I'll have to make
one of those as the old one is on borrowed time. For anyone who has never
made an O-ring, it's easy. The kit costs only a few dollars and you can
make
them any size, any length, in about two minutes.
