I am currently putting a 700R4 overdrive transmission into my '74 Bricklin.
It is possible to attach such a transmission onto the Bricklin AMC or Ford
blocks (See Advanced Adapters for necessary adapters). However, I choose to
also install the mating Chevy small block in 305 CI (5.0 liters) with
Throttle Port Injection in order to benefit from the better performance and
economy of a more modern TPI engine. Using the mated engine and
transmission simplifies the process since the computer control also controls
torque converter lockup.

However, the motor and transmission mounts will need to be modified. Other
list members who have done this swap say it is not too complex. The drive
shaft will need to be modified along with the yoke since the splines are
different (at least in my case). Shortening the shaft is not too expensive,
but lengthening it is more difficult and expensive. I will be reporting
progress to the list with pictures as I do the swap.

This kind of swap isn't simple. If I weren't doing a frame off restoration
I probably wouldn't consider it.

Has anybody put in an overdrive trani into their car? If so what do I need
to do for the conversion? Do I need to shorten the drive line? Do I need
to build a new bracket?

Thanks
Greg
