i have no answer; i rarely do. however, my engine stopped one day while
working on the restore and i traced it to the pickup tube in the tank.
to get it out, you need to rotate the large flanged washer
counterclockwise(i believe). that metal washer has a large rubber
gasket for a seal. when this is loosened it allows you to pull out the
pickup tube and the sending unit.
i was able to clean the varnish, from years of sitting, out of the
pickup tube and get the engine running again. but in the meantime i
noticed that the little brass can had a pinhole or two in it. well i
never got far enough to see that the gas gauge didn't work but if the
can would not float, the gauge would not read properly.
could be a float problem, the unit that sends the signal to the gauge or
even some electrical difficulty between the sending unit and the gauge.
