bob burgess, #319, here. i have the engine running reasonably well and
have routed all the vacuum lines according to the schematic in the parts
manual. someone installed a vacuum compressor for air doors but had it
hooked to the wrong place. on the other hand, i don't know where the
right place is. there is an unused port on the manifold connection
going to the heater box. i hooked up the compressor to that port and
when i start the engine the compressor seems to function but it does not
produce pressure. my first inclination is to take the compressor apart
but i wondered whether there is "enough" vacuum because the port on the
compressor is larger than the port on the manifold fitting. not having
any experience with this kind of a device, i don't know whether it is
running fast enough to produce any pressure. if it is a diaphram air
pump, it should produce pressure at any speed, i would assume.
increasing the speed of the engine does not seem to increase the speed
of the pump significantly.
it also seems as though someone drilled a hole into the rear bumper and
a line and fittings would indicate that this is for a resevoir for the
air door system. is this a standard approach or an inovation of an
experimental nature? i have an electric pump with the air board but i
have not installed it yet. i thought it made sense to try to get the
system to work before i made it more complicated.
also i have a manual coming from scott but until then, i have no info on
where the vacuum comes from the for the headlights. all my diagrams
indicate "engine source" but where does that tie in. the vacuum diagrm
in the parts manual does not indicate the connection point. this is a
'74 with a can but has a '75 bumper. it would seem logical to use the
bumper for the resevoir rather than the can. does that make sense?
