I had a rebuilt 351W available that was out of a '73 Mercury, so that's what
I put in old 1343. The main differences are:
1. The '73 oil pan had a front sump.
2. Power steering pump and brackets are way different.
3. Different exhaust manifolds.
4. The '73 doesn't have the holes in the back of the heads for the smog tube.
So, no smog plumbing.
5. '73 intake manifold doesn't have the hole for the choke tubing or the
ported vacuum switch on the rear drivers side.
6. The choke on the '73 carb had a tube going to the exhaust manifold, the
'75 Brick has the tube going into the intake manifold. So... I don't have
the tube hooked up (see 5 above).
7. The '73 used points instead of electronic iginition. So, I used the stuff
from my '75.
8. The '73 oil dipstick went in the front of the block on the passenger side,
the '75 goes into the side of the pan. So, I plugged the hole where the
original dipstick went in.
9. Had to get the correct temp sending unit for the VDO gauge as the one from
the '73 read way too high.
Other than that, the engines are pretty much identical. Fortunately, I have
the original engine so I was able to get the parts I needed off of it (oil
pan & pump, power steering pump/brackets, and distributor).
