The easiest way to check operation is to lightly pry the end of the spring
form the retainer and rotate the spring to see if it binds the clutch (don't
forget to put it back together). This can sometimes done on the vehicle.  If
there is any doubt as to the clutch's bearings or operation you should
probably just replace it.
