Even an experienced auto manufacturer like John Delorean can underestimate
the difficulties of starting up a new car company. Bricklin had problems
because, like Delorean, he had to work with an inexperienced workforce in
order to get the money he needed. Also, like Delorean, he introduced
innovative manufacturing technologies ( acrylic over fiberglass vs
stainless steel over fiberglass). Unfortunately, the technology Bricklin
chose was far less developed at that time. While the process of
backfilling rigidized acrylic panels with fiberglass is a standard
technique today, in 1974 it was very new and all the bugs hadn't been
worked out.
