Well, #2821 gets modified today. I almost hated doing it because the
car even had the original spark wires and ran! Just too little hp for too
much weight. The intent with this mod is to maintain a stock "like"
appearance by using Ford Motorsport parts where feasible, and Edelbrock
throughout most of the mechs for consistency. Sorta as if someone would
have done the mod 25 years ago. What's missing from this list is the
radiator that will be re-cored with 4rows, and wrapped tri-y headers for a
289 Mustang circa 69-73, Taylor 409 wires, Champion Gold plugs, and ARP
timing cover and waterpump S/S bolts. Since the block had only 5k mi on it
and was kept with synthetic we "should" be ok. The gas tank was pristine.
We'll be pushing around of 300-325 hp and atleast 385+ torque when
completed. What's really new is the Holley 4150 double pumper with vacuum
secondaries!, elec choke, and Ford a/t kickdown. This is a new set up from
Holley that just became available, and should be more economical to run, and
very driveable, so we'll see what happens. I'm having the timing cover bead
blasted, and as you may be able to tell, there's very little chrome going
under the hood [v/covers and a/cleaner are Ford Motorsport black with
brushed alum. ribs. Malcolm didn't put any on the outside, so it seems
counter Bricklin to me to load up the inside with the stuff.
And no, I'm not keeping the emissions on. Since I'd rather move to
China before I'd move to California, I should get by many states emissions
as long as I keep the jets reasonably lean. I will be maintaining the PCV
system.
The goal on this project is to maintain or improve driveability while
giving it some boost. This a mild mod, set for 500-5500 rpm, as much as I'd
want to push a 351W. The autotrans has a shift kit. I admit the fan set up
is a bit unusual, with small t'stat controlled 10" twin elec fans in PUSH
mode ahead of the radiator(just fits nicely in front of the condenser-
flush, clearing the A/C receiver), and a non-clutch 17" race fan pulling.
This coupled with the extra row and more air space between the fins of the
new core AND wrapped headers AND lot's more room under the hood SHOULD lower
the temp to a livable degree here in Florida with the a/c running.
Well, wish me luck. I'll keep ya posted. Pics will be forthcoming.
