David,
Let me tell you my boot story. About a year and a half ago I bought the
last original boot from Tanner for 50 or 60. It was nice and pristine.
Then I took my car to someone (I will not say who to protect the guilty) for
some work -- it's a long story but after I got the car back, I was driving
and noticed some electrical tape on the shifter boot. When I looked
closely, it was apparent that the boot had been violently ripped. All I can
figure it that the guy must have tried to drop the tranny down without
taking off the shifter knob -- and just ripped it down and out. All the
screw holes were ripped, the accordian was ripped about 1.5 inch long, and
the very top was ripped. Well, I was pissed but the "mechanic" refused to
acknowledge what happened. What I ended up doing was going to Grand Auto
(now Kragen). They had a $15.00 Hurst shifter boot that is easy to cut to
fit and it works great -- not plasticy at all, real good rubber, like my
ripped original. If you can't find one, I can send one from here (San
Francisco). Kim
