Odometer

My odometer has quit working. The speedometer still works so the cable should 
be good. I tried to remove the instrument from the dash, but can't get the 
cable unscrewed from the back of it. It is too tight to loosen with my 
fingers and there doesn't seem to be room to get a wrench or pliers on it. 
Any suggestions?
