I removed mine while it was jacked up, but it's not essential, just easier.

Well, you would have to fabricate some front / rear locating links to
replace the leaf springs. With coilovers, you could in theory 'dial in' the
suspension better, but I doubt it would be worth the total cost / effort.
Another problem is that the stock shock mounting locations would cause coil
binding, requiring some fairly major frame modifications. As it is, the
shocks bind up some. Your money would be better spent buying adjustable gas
shocks and optimizing their settings.
