Jon,
Thank you for using our web-based feed back forum.
I am Lt. Marx with the Highway Patrol and currently over the safety inspect=
ion program.
You are correct that vintage vehicles do not need a safety inspection. All=
that is needed is for it to be properly registered.
The confusion probably comes from Utah Code 41-1a-226, which says, "The own=
er of a vintage vehicle applying for registration under this part shall pro=
vide a signed statement certifying that the vintage vehicle is owned and op=
erated for the purposes enumerated in Section 41-21-1<http://le.utah.gov/~c=
ode/TITLE41/htm/41_21_000100.htm> and that the vintage vehicle has been ins=
pected and found safe to operate on the highways of this state."
This is just the owner of the vehicle testifying to this, not an official i=
nspection.
Utah Code 41-21-1 gives the definition of a Vintage Vehicle.
Code 41-21-4 says, "The provisions of this title relating to minimum safety=
equipment are not applicable to vehicles properly registered under Title 4=
1, Chapter 1a, Part 2, Registration, so long as the original equipment, on =
the vehicle at the time of its manufacture, is in good operating condition =
or has been replaced by equal or more efficient equipment in good working o=
rder and the vehicle is not operated in a manner or at a time that would co=
nstitute a public nuisance or create a hazard to other automobiles or perso=
ns."
Basically, as long as you properly register the vehicle and it meets the re=
quirements for a vintage vehicle, there is no inspection needed and no cert=
ificate other than a registration issued by the state.
Hopefully this helps. Please contact me anytime if you have any other ques=
tions or concerns.

the utah DMV said you can answer this question. I have a
car registered as a Vintage Vehicle. according to UCA 53-8-2
05 para 1(b) (iii) vintage vehicles are not required to get
a safety inspection certificate. But i keep hearing from my
car club members that Utah requires a current certificate
be keep in the vehicles when on the road. Is this true and
if so can you provde a reference. This will clear up a lot
of uncertainty within my car club.
Thank you
