I am very happy to hear about the 8 run groups returning -- some of
those
work assignments on 6 groups were loooong!

I don't want to step into the argument over how many course workers are
required per station (and my opinion is somewhere between Ed's and
James' in any case), but I have one concrete suggestion to add:

Since I think everyone agrees that we should not have all newbies at a
station could we modify the signup sheet to make the first column of the
course work assignment read "station captain" and put a notation that
you must be a 1-year veteran to take this position? It would make it
easier for people to see when there is a need and sign themselves up
to fill the gap.

I would also be happy to write up a quite note on working the course
to be added to the website and/or made available at registration if that
would help.

OK, one more suggestion, this one to course designers and/or setup
workers: sometimes you may not need two stations (with 2 flags & two
radios) even if you do need 2 runners to cover all the cones safely and
quickly. Don't put out the extra worker station, but do call the station
with the wide area of responsibility to the attention of the event
chairs
who can make sure that station gets an extra worker. Net savings: 2
workers. Hint: think of a longish stretch of course but with few cones
expected to get knocked down... this does NOT imply that every
station requires 4 workers, BTW :).

And then let's discuss how to boost our attendance so that it will not
fall below 230!
