I wouldn't blame the environmentalists (much as I'd like to)... more
like simple economics. We use large paved, otherwise vacant pieces of
land. As long as there's a demand for real estate and land prices are
sufficiently high, those pieces of land are more valuable to their
owner as something other than an autocross site. The only real
solution is for the owner to have a vested interest in preserving the
site for autocross--and the only such owner would be us.
Many/most racetracks have large skidpad areas that are suitable (and
more easily available) for autocrosses. It's unfortunate that they're
a bit out of the way (Thunderhill) or if not, rather busy on the
weekends (Laguna, Infineon).
