Another possibility...
A friend of mine with an '02 WRX wagon had a creaking
noise coming from his front end a while back although
the sound was far more nebulous and not as localized
as mine (it also didn't turn into a grinding noise at
higher speeds). His problem turned out to be rust that
had creeped behind the brake rotor.
