The SCCA has suspended the eligibility of the Kumho V710 tire for Solo
events.
Since the recall was only announced on Monday afternoon, I doubt that
many V710 owners will have the opportunity to receive their
replacement tires in time for Sunday's event.
As I see it, there are two issues:
1)Are the V710s protestable?
2)Will tech fail V710s on safety?
My personal assessment is:
1) Aside from safety concerns, it would be unsportsmanlike to
protest the tires this soon. I think it would be reasonable to
allow an extra weekend before the ban is enforced by protest.
2) The failures seem to be road-racing related, and careful
examination of the tires between autocross runs should minimize
the remaining risk. I realize that the SF Region may have
liability/insurance concerns as well as obligations to the
National club, but I think that it would be safe to allow the
tires to be run for one more event, provided that those using
them closely monitor the condition of the tires between their
runs.
Those are my thoughts. There are a few people who need an official
answer. The sooner, the better for them so that they can make plans.
