Warning: Too much autocross content for one of my
posts :-)
Okay, Lorry and I switched cars during fun runs on
Sunday(we both have the same car). He's running Kumho
R-Compounds (225/50/16), and I'm running Falken
Azenises (215/45/16). So do you remember your first
experience with R-Compounds? Here's how mine went...
Going through the first loop produced an extreme grin
factor (I almost blew a face gasket). This seemed to
add more lead to my foot so I really stomped on it
through the slalom and to my suprise it stuck (for the
most part). At the end of the slalom as I approached
the left hand sweeper I found myself going in circles.
Somehow I was now going through the course backwards
<eek>. They really are quite abrupt when they let go.
I can clearly see the benefit of requiring street
tires in the novice class and I'm glad I didn't start
running R's early on. I think that because of this I
was quickly able to sus out the R's and keep the
pointy side of the car heading downstream. What a
blast!
Kumho vs Falken - The first thing I immediately
noticed was that the R compounds were much more
precise as turn in response dramatically improved over
what I experienced with the Falkens. I was about .75
seconds faster on the Kumhos and Lorry was about .75
seconds slower on the Falkens (which means Peter
probably would have PAXed 10th on Sunday had he been
driving Lorry's car (still not good enough to beat his
own son though ;-)). I still LOVE my Falkens but now
that I've experienced the R-compounds... they're a
drug!
Anyhow, there's my unscientific analysis of Kumho vs
Falken.
