I like Illuminas, Konis, and Bilsteins. I have run
them each for at least 100,000 miles on 510s as well
as on other cars.
I find the Illuminas the most durable of the three.
The only Illuminas I have killed were on my '85 CRX,
and Broadhead had abused them before me. Likely he let
them bottom out with his very low torsion adjustments.
Bottoming out will kill any shock. Tokico did a
warranty replacement on those shocks after Peggy asked
them to at the SEMA show. Konis on the other hand were
never warrantied nor even interested in rebuilding as
long has been the promise. 8-(
Koni also pulls the product just about the time I am
ready for a second set it seems. Maybe I keep the cars
too long for them. 8-)
I have had Bilstein warranty the motorhome shocks too.
I actually broke the rears when I broke the upper
mounts. It seems I use the thing a bit hard....
At this time I have Konis on one car [a 510 wagon],
Illuminas on five cars [3 street cars, two road race
cars], Bilsteins on two [a 510 and the Miata] plus the
motorhome.
But then I've never had a machine as finely tuned as a
Probe to really tax the shock design so what the heck,
another half truth.....
