How sudden and apparently complete the fall from grace!

Clearly "101" is the proper usage.  The full name is
"Highway 101".

Like "Monsignor O' Malley", which can be properly
shortened to "O'Malley", "highway 101" can only be
properly shortened to  "101".  "The highway" would be correct,
as would "the Monsignor".  Just as "the Monsignor O'Malley"
is a strange construct, "the highway 101" is unwwieldy.

"The 101 freeway" is an incorrect construction by any
reasonable northern rules of grammar.

Please do your part to straighten those SoCal people out.
