Yup, Seth's right, radar detectors are legal in CA. I had a Passport
several years ago that I was pretty happy with. It did a pretty good job at
detecting radar, and it did not have laser protection. After I blew that
one up (after hardwiring, I quickly realized it needed only 9V, oops), I got
a Whistler with radar and laser detection. Piece of crap. Didn't do squat.
I would see the cop way before it beeped at all. Not too long ago I picked
up a Valentine 1, pretty expensive, but it's detection capabilities are very
impressive. Far and away much better than any detector I've played with.
In fact, it saved my butt just this morning. After catching the K-band
signal, I tapped the brakes and downshifted (I was doing 55 in a 40), the
GTO that was on my tail squeezed his throttle and squirted by me. He had no
idea, and was quickly pulled over by Mr. Motorcycle CHP.

Radar detectors are quite legal in California. He can't cite you for it. If
he is already giving you a ticket for speeding and no front plate, I would
have refused to open the hood for him, or, at least, argued with him about
it. If there was a chance of a warning, I would have played along. Remember,

at 55 in a 40 zone he had you by the short hairs. You pissed him off, for
some reason? Like he's going to know what your intake is, whether it is
50-state approved. - My method for avoiding these kind of tickets (while
driving a RED Sporty Car Camaro) is to drive "like I didn't steal it"
<grin>,
and enjoy my racing at the track. I regress once in a while, like when Barry

Goldine tried to drop inside me on a 2-lane freeway cloverleaf in a Honda.
Okay, 80 in third might have been excessive. As you noted, the cop could
have
caught you really using the car! -
Oh Yes - My Passport detector in my SHO has saved my butt and my daughters,
several times!
