RTE: STP leaving racing, although I think this has little to do with
autocrossing.
STP sponsorship of Richard Petty and his #43 Winston Cup car is
going into a "back-off" mode. The full deal will go through the Sears Point
Winston Cup race in June. Then will return for a one-shot at Atlanta Motor
Speedway near the end of the season.
They hired Max Muhleman to advise them as they re-evaluate the
program.
The Clorox people who now own the company are not "into"
motorsports. STP came along with Glad Bags and Jonny Cat litter, the two
brands they wanted.
They're going to do something called a Celebration Tour of five
cities to celebrate their three decades of sponsoring Richard Petty. The
Tour begins this Friday at Daytona.
They have some deal going with peel-off labels with the grand prize
being a Viper. Lesser prizes are Mattel toy cars with STP stickers.
