Dave,
The 460 is certainly a great motor as far as pulling power and reliability
goes. It will litterally, "tow anything". However, 406's are old engines
and are notorious gas hogs.
You are correct about "a perfect world" but that assumes similar thermal
efficiency between engines and the 460 is sub-par on this catagory. The
later model engines are much more efficient and therefore most will get
similar mileage towing the same load.
Diesels can be found but they are not common. The 5.8/351 like you had is
probably going to be your best bet.
