I agree that longer wheelbase = better towing.  The thing with the extended 
vans is that they aren't longer wheelbase, just more overhang.

I think you will find it was the pickup, and not the length.  I usually 
find that the longer the wheelbase, the better the towing.  The longer 
tail-end of the van should not matter that much.  If it does, you can 
always get a load-leveler hitch and anti-sway dampner installed.  

Have a friend who just got one of those and tows his DSP Bimmer and 
heavy open trailer.  He says you just hitch it and forget it.  :-)
