Look around your events, is the average age 18? If it's not, than the age
comment is true that SCCA members are older. Living in San Diego, I am aware
of and have attended a couple of the Race Legal events. I'm 35, and I'm an old
fogie @ nearly twice there age, in the minds of the 16-20 yr. olds in
attendance . When Race Legal first started, the founder did come to the SD
SCCA Solo Committee for assistance in event management, use of
equipment, and assistance in creating an autocross course to be run during the
day, prior to the night drags. So far as event management goes, he didn't need
our help for he was more organized at his first event, then we have become
after 30 some years. He obtained his own equipment very quickly, and the two
autocrosses we helped staff were total bombs. Other than a few existing
autocrossers in the demographic, no one showed until the
Drag registration, when participants showed in the hundreds.
On the other hand, we do have 15-20 new entrants at every event within the
demographic at our SCCA events, few however show up more than 3 times. Due to
our average 250-300 entrant events, 3 runs and potentially no fun runs is not
cost effective for the demographic. 1st time existing SCCA members pay $35.00,
and non SCCA members pay $50.00. Before to many people comment on the cost, we
do sell out our allotted 25 new memberships at every
