Sorry for the bandwidth, guys and gals, but I need some help. If you're
not INTIMATELY familiar with the Chebby Vortec V-6, please hit the
delete button right now. I'm not looking for speculation. I'm looking
for positive input.
Here's the deal: My '96 Chebby S-10, Vortec V-6, 5-speed, 120K on the
clock, has developed a serious coolant leak. I almost burned it up
coming back from the Houston NT.
The leak's not coming from any of the hoses. Nor is it coming from the
water pump or the thermostat housing. It's not the heater core - the
carpet is dry as a bone. And it's not one of the freeze plugs. It's
coming from somewhere on the upper back side of the block/heads - back
where the "distributor" is located - and it's running down over the
transmission. But I can't find it! I've even climbed up on top of the
motor and shined a flashlight down the back side between the motor and
the firewall. It's pretty easy to spot that bright orange Dexcool
anti-freeze, but I can't see where it's coming from.
I'm thinking maybe a cracked block or head but I'm hoping that there's a
freeze plug or a little bypass hose somewhere there on the back side of
the block. Have any of you ever encountered this problem before or do
any of you have any first-hand experience with this type of leak?!?!?
Please respond directly so we don't clog up the list with this discussion.
