For cheap dial-up, you can't beat Netzero's price (free, 10 hrs/month).
You can send and receive emails on your account from the web, and check
emails sent to your Netzero address from other webmail accounts like
Yahoo/Netscape etc. I have never used notebook dial-up on the road, so I
can't speak to their remote dial-up access. The only downside is a banner
you can't hide, and it's a little slow at times.
I have been using it for enough years to pay for a couple sets of Hoosiers
(easier for autocrossers to comprehend than actual currency values).
