I don't know what year you are talking about, but on the older (through 98?)
models with a mechanical pump, you can get the pump "turned up" for more
power...cost around here was about $400 for this....usually the local
Cummins truck shop will know the name of the guy doing the mods.
For the newer models there are several "black boxes" that get plugged inline
between (IIRC) the MAP sensor and the diagnostic port......I had an Edge EZ
box that was about $600.
Either of the above mods are highly recommended......the mechanical pumps
were limited in certain years to only having so much "extra" in them, but
getting 50hp and 100lbs of torque out of any of them was no problem.
Most recently, I had an 2001 HO with 6 speed trans....the EDGE EZ box took
my empty around town mileage from 15 to 18, empty highway to 20-22 and
towing my 24' trailer was between 12-14......it also added enough power that
with the slightest bump or moisture on the pavement, it would spin the tires
on the highway in SIXTH gear (with the trailer)...
When I had that truck, I did a lot of research/opinion mining on
www.turbodieselregister.com
Hope this helps
