Odd that this should come up. It was exactly three years ago on the weekend
of Grandma's Marathon. I was discussing this with my wife yesterday we drove
back down from Duluth. I hurt almost as much today as I did then. :-|
It wasn't directly attributable to rough pavement, though, it was a cone (a
group of three cones to be precise.) The pavement was pretty crappy.
The inside of the left front tire caught the base of the apex cone. (I
turned in too soon.) I think the sidewall gripped the asphalt; but anyway
the whole cart rotated up and over on the left front axle. I guess that
momentum had to go somewhere.
Dumped me on the pavement and came to rest upright; still running. By the
time I did the obligatory "how many fingers" routine, and finished my next
run, it was obvious that something pretty serious was wrong with my wrist.
To SCCA's credit they paid every dime of my deductible and non-covered
medical expenses, and even helped convince my health insurance company that
this injury was NOT the result of an automobile accident. The HMO didn't get
that at first, when they saw SCCA on the paperwork as an additional carrier,
they REALLY didn't want to cover it.
Cast didn't come off until October, the arm was a real mess. The cart was
BIG fun though, and I won't say I wouldn't drive one again, but I won't
pretend they aren't pretty easy for a novice to flip.
AFAIK the site owner never found out, and that was probably a good thing.
After all, I pays my money and takes my chances, but I'd hate to cause a
site owner to get squeamish and shut us out. (That site is gone now anyway,
but for very different reasons.)

A buddy of mine broke his arm flipping a kart at an SCCA kart school. I
don't
pretend to remember all the details.
