How many of you old geezers out there remember a three man crew with
stopwatches timing the events?  We would average the times from the
stopwatches and post one run at a time.  A friend of mine ran a brand new
Datsun Roadster that was several seconds faster than most of the
competition, so thousandths of a second didn't make much difference.  If
there was a tie, we had a runoff.  The fast cars ran "race compound" recap
tires.  The trick setup for wheels was to pop the rivets out of your steel
wheel and weld a wider rim from a Chevy or Ford onto your center section.
And the only Subaru available was the 360, sort of a tippy egg shaped
econobox on 10 inch tires.  I am personally thankful that we have ever
better equipment for timing and scoring, and that the cars keep getting
better and safer.  I still like the idea of runoffs, though.
