If you run 205s you can get 4 tires in a Miata easily, indeed once I
even got 5 full-size tires in it! Now that I have 225 Hoosiers which
won't fit in the trunk I've bought a clamp-on luggage rack and with that
I can easily carry 4 tires and all my race stuff.
I remember going to Nationals once (1998) with so much stuff crammed in
the Miata it looked like one of those clown cars when I unloaded it! 4
tires, 2 suitcases, my helmet, a wash bucket and soap, tools, 50 CDs, 4
cones, an air compressor and an extra Borla muffler! (shipped to
Colorado Springs because it would not have made it to Seattle before I
left). Whoever said that a Miata was small? Oh yeah, for all of those
who say that you have to trailer your car to do well I was 3rd of 59
that year :-)
