How about just a small VCR that will run off 12v and will record video and
audio? I'd like to find one of those for cheap to use with a camera for
races...

When it says AV in be careful, I thought the same thing with my 740, it has
an Svideo in I believe, so the X-10 cameras won't work. If you can get one
with Firewire spend the extra cash, it will be worth it over USB. I spent
close to $800 though on the 740, but it also takes megapixel stills, so I
didn't have to buy a digital camera as well.

Anybody know anything about these little babies?
I've got my eye on this beautiful little Sony DCR-TRV240. With USB outputs
it ought to upload to my computer really easily. It's also got A/V inputs
so one could hook up one of those little X-10 cams (you know, the ones in
all those freakin' annoying little pop-ups that block your screen while
you're trying very hard to surf for good internet porn) for external camera
shots and all kinds of neat view angles. Driver cam, suspension cam, wheel
cam foot cam, etc, etc.
So far the best price I've been able to find one for is about $450 online.
Are there any other comparable digital camcorders on the market for about
the same money?
