Phil, et al-
When I was in elementary school, my dear ol' Dad figured out that there was
something basically wrong with me... after I took the lawn mower apart, and
wanted to know if I could put "three deuces" on the family DeSoto. Trying
to channel my boyish enthusiasm into something productive (THAT was a lost
cause) he got me a subscription to Mechanix Illustrated. I was immediately
enchanted by Tom McCahill's writings. The dog's name was "Boiji" wasn't
it? Another great writer, who managed to give the technical info, good
road test input, and be hilarious at the same time. I used to love his
"Mail for McCahill" column, where folks would write and ask for automotive
advice, or how to blend pipe tobacco.
(Guess my old man was pretty smart after all. While I was reading MI, I
wasn't messing with his stuff.)

Or the gas-turbine-powered superchargers. Ran on propane. Never knew
anyone who had one, but it was an interesting idea.
