Let me preface me statements by saying I am still a novice working on my second
season and am following these arguments with interest. Car classification is a
problem in EVERY form of racing; ever see what happens before Le Mans every
year? I happen to drive an RX-7TT (and am not yet capable of doing it justice)
and agree that this car along with the Z06 presents some classing problems. I
don't feel it fair however to bump the Z06 out of stock, as it does meet the
spirit of the stock rules. For the same reason I don't think it fair to bump
the RX-7 into AS where it would turn into a monster as the Z06 is now. I think
us RX-7 drivers just have to recognize that you can't expect a car to rule the
same class for 10 years. I think the Boxster S and the M3 will develop and step
up.
I feel Andy's point is the best I have heard: you have to make the slices
somewhere. This leaves some cars at the top of their class and some at the
bottom; it will always effect some cars more than others, but what else do you
do? Adding more classes at this point is not the answer as it also dillutes the
competition since the "good" drivers are now spread among more classes.
The Z06 is at the center of this problem, but every class tends to have a
couple dominant cars. If the classes just multiplied to make every car equally
competitive you would in the end have a classing system that resembles a single
make spec-racer series. I still feel the Z06 is a dominant car, but after
seeing Scott Bowman's performance in Houston (granted it was in ASP) the Z06
still has some competition. I think the problem is amplified by the fact that
the best SS drivers happen to be running Z06's, making the rest of us look even
slower.
I think we should wait longer before making any decisions at this point, but I
wouldn't be opposed to seeing the Vipers and Porsches in SS either; I think the
competition would still be close.
