As an SM driver, maybe I can field this one. Part of the reason is
recruitment. I can tell you that it worked for me. I like to tinker with
my car, so Stock is out. I like horsepower, so Street Prepared is out. I
like to drive my car on the street, so Prepared/Mod is out.
One thing I find particularly appealing about SM is that it is relatively
cheap to run, especially in the drivetrain department. Before flaming,
follow me for a second. We'll use a Civic as an example, since I know them
and it is part of the "target demographic". An SP Legal, built to the
limits 4G Civic can probably put out around 120-125 HP. This is an engine
that is bored, decked, and milled to the factory limits, with Aftermarket FI
and Ignition. Easily a $5K setup, probably more. My 4G Civic puts 130-140
to the crank, and I have less than $1200 in the motor. My next step in
developement will be forced induction. I will probably put another
$1000-$1500 into this project, and then I'm done with power developement. I
will have the ability to produce more power than the tires can ever hope to
handle. The limiting factor in SM is the tires. As long as SM uses DOT
tires, the ultra exotic stuff will be unneccesary. It is allowed, but not
needed.
Oh, and nothing is built at or near the limits of the class yet. Engines
are the easy part and have therefore been built. Suspensions are still for
the most part SP legal.
