I first heard about EDRs on the news last night. Were you
aware of them?

http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/departments/nrd-01/summaries/EDR.html

"EDRs are currently being installed in many lighter
vehicles, and are also being installed on large vehicles
(trucks and buses) as part of the engine control system.
For light vehicles, General Motors (GM) is in the forefront
of this activity, having installed EDRs in all their air
bag equipped vehicles since 1990. In 1999, they installed a
new generation of EDRs which capture pre-crash information
(vehicle speed, brake application, engine's revolutions per
minute, and throttle position) for 5 seconds prior to the
crash."

They capture data continuously, the news broadcast said,
and write the last 5 seconds to memory! They implied that
some data is cached so that your driving activities could
be retrieved!
