I registered for this award at the PRI show in Indy last week. There is only
one Valvoline Cup. Everyone from road racers to circle trackers to autocrossers
compete for it. The way the guys at their booth explained it to me was that
they will have an index to rate performance. How this works I have no idea. And
they didn't seem to either. Sounds like some marketing guy thought it up but
didn't have to think about the practicalities of implementing it.
Anyway, they take your top 15 finishes for the year and rank you for the Cup.
Supposedly the more folks you beat, the more points you get for that event. And
you get an extra point if you win. Also, supposedly they also take into account
if the win was at a regional, divisional, or national level. Obviously the
level of competition goes up as you go up the ladder and they said they take
that into account. How, again I have no idea.
Then your results are compared to other folks in different divisions, etc. And
then your results are put into the ranking against folks from other sports.
Now, how do you suppose they know how competitive your divisional autocross is
with some roundy-rounder across the country's feature race?
See where I'm going here?
BTW, Paul Gentilozzi had just gotten done registering for the Cup before I did.
There's your competition!

This could be interesting. There's even a trophy for time trial events,
including autox, Solo I, etc.
