Are you kidding? I have modified the Europa linkage so it has a small
pattern and NO play. I can beat all the syncros, all the time. That's not
saying much, since Renault syncros are really slow.

Quite. I now make a momentary pause in neutral with every shift, and have
no more problems.

Maybe you'd want to do that on a VW (and maybe not: I was never overly
impressed with the shifters on VW cars I have owned), but I'll never go back
to the guess-a-gear shock shifter on a Eruopa!
