A milliner is a shop specializing in, among other things, ladies
hats. With hats not being a vitally important accessory for women anymore,
I'm not surprised that many people don't know that word.
Now some real trivia: a mercury compound (usually mercurous
nitrate) was used in the making of felt and in preparing fur (both used a
lot in hats). The mercury vapors would be breathed in by the milliner and
result in mercury poisoning over years of exposure. Mental symptoms
include irritability, loss of memory, depression, anxiety, and other
personality changes. Thus a crazy person is said to be "mad as a hatter".
