It was windy on Friday and Saturday, but it was just practicing for
Sunday. Officially, Sunday didn't happen. All class results were frozen
as of Saturday night. The first run group did get their runs in, and the
second got well into theirs before the wind came up and ended the event.
Since there were second drivers waiting for runs in all the early classes,
no classes finished their second day's runs so none were counted at
all. Some results would have changed. Such is life. Obviously no
Challenge competition. I shouldn't have sandbagged (AKA sucked) on Saturday.
Did I mention it was windy?
The turnout was a bit dissappointing, but the site is absolutely
awesome. There is more than adequate space to run Nationals, and it
wouldn't require any concrete patching for the near future. There are some
patches that have been done, but they removed entire blocks of concrete and
replaced them. Those patches are somewhat less adhesive than the older
concrete, making for a few interesting moments, but Howard said he thought
this site may have the best concrete we've got available anywhere. It is
quite sticky, but less abrasive than most concrete. It did not seem to
develop marbles at all. It's a bit narrow (500 feet?) but all but
infinitely long. It's also very flat. That would be a bit of a problem if
it rained, since it wouldn't drain as well as some sites.
There is going to be a bit of research into weather patterns to improve the
scheduling next year. Springtime in West Texas? Chances of high winds are
only about 100%....
