Arthur:
In Chicago Region, the editor (i.e. me) does the layout. The printing and
mailing are outsourced.
I send off a Zip disk with page-layout files to the printer (DeForest
printing in Elmhurst, IL, who do a great job). Thye handle the pre-press,
printing, and binding (we do a stapled magazine format). The printer then
sends the finished products over to a professional mailing house (called
A-OK or something, I believe) who print the labels from a diskette, affix
them to the magazine, and drop the whole shebang at the post office.
I can't imagine what it would be like to do 1,500 plus mailing labels by
hand a month on a volunteer basis, but even doing a much smaller number
would be pretty miserable. I'd say the mailing house would be the first
place to start outsourcing part of the process.
