I think the numbers should be somewhere around 8 to 10 inches tall, and
have at least a 2 inch stroke, and, please make them contrasting colors
to the paint scheme. But don't do red on blue, where the tones are
almost the same...be sure they are easy to read, and everyone in T&S
will love you! The old SCCA rule of black numbers in a white ball was an
early solution, and works great, though it has no romance. But if you
get too creative, the numbers can become very hard to read. Simplicity
and clarity are the keys.
Some cars are fiberglass/aluminum. We use contact paper on our aluminum
car. On our Camaro, only the rear fenders are metal, so all the magnetic
stuff had to go back there. I made those numbers out of white magnetic
sheets (cheap in buy at some plastic type stores, here it's called TAP
Plastics). Make the templates using any word/type management programs,
as big as you can fit on an 8x11.5 sheet of paper and remember those
skills you learned in kindergarten.
Others use static cling stuff, which requires great care when you put
it away, but is pretty nifty and work on all surfaces. We've never used
it. We have a hard enough time keeping the magnetic stuff flat after an
event...putting it away in a flat binder, folder, or whatever is important.
Again, SoloTime carries both magnetics and static cling. The Alts, who
run the store, are very competitive autocrossers and understand all the
ins and outs of the sport.
