Remember that the Big Book is written as a guide for
the Big Event in Kansas and most of the local
operations are encouraged to work out what is best.
The National classes are not sacred!
This said, if you have a region with 80% of the people
in wrong motored 510s, you ought to have a wrong motor
510 class, and forget about modifying HS or FSP just
for them. This pretty much is exactly what led to the
creation of the SFR OSP class mant years ago. Well,
not the 80% part, but there were about a dozen cars of
these clearly not fitting the rule structure [they ran
mostly as a flase grid with the Prepared cars until
then. Not legal as P either, but no legal P car owner,
well Komush is always an exception, felt threatened by
them so no one protested] and ergo. OSP, SP without
limits! Works well locally, very well.
Kevin's proposal to cap National Stock Classes at 7
years could easily be followed by local ClassicStock
and VintageStock classes to accept the
disenfranchised.
Since I too am from the area where Kevin runs, SFR the
region that knew how, and his sentiments are not his
alone, I have incorporated VS and VSP classes in the
events I run for those who feel the pressure. Believe
me, SFR runs with a LOT of peer pressure folks!
We can always add more Vintage classes as demand
arises locally, so far it hasn't.
HS has about a zero interest around here. Almost all
the P and M classes have been chased out of the
SCCA/SFR game and practice at other venues too FWIW.
Including ALL the year 2000 National trophy winners
from SFR! Maybe they are as anachronistic as 15 year
old stockers in SCCA think. SFR has tended to lead the
club in such matters in the past I'm afraid.
It seems that the old "problems" of Healeys unfairly
beating Sprites [or vice-versa....] are forgotten and
all the Healeys and Sprites care about is being beaten
by CRXs. Times change. One V class has been
underwhelming, multiple ones not necessary.
