Don't get me wrong.. I do like open wheel cars and I will have one again
someday. My 72 Winkleman FSV was a riot, right up to (and over) Pueblo's
turn ten wall.. Yes, once the car is set up, there isn't that much to do.
All the parts are light and accessible.
Open wheel cars are VERY demanding to drive well.. Everything happens SO
FAST.. And you KNOW when you get it right (and wrong).. Not something I was
ready to do mid-season. And I do believe driving a fast car makes driving a
slow car easier. There is a considerable amount of setup and Aero
knowledge needed, that us stock class guys don't even have to think about.
EVERYTHING is adjustable and you can really screw yourself up, or make it the
most enjoyable thing you ever drove. Harvey Staub's vintage FV comes to
mind, only two laps, but so sweet.(20 something years development).
Experience really counts, most of the folks at the top of the formula car
classes have been there a while, we stock guys make up for it by commuting.
Yes, a FF can be had for under 10K... but they want cash... that's a lot of
money when it isn't on a VISA statement.
Modified cars, particularly formula cars don't fit into everyone's
lifestyle. I took a pass on a very good deal this summer because, quite
frankly, starting the learning and development process over again seemed
daunting. Especially at a time I will be on a ship. We don't all have the
talent or resources to build our own replacement parts.. no less a whole car.
I refuse to weld anything that I must trust my life to.
I already have the truck and trailer, so that isn't an issue for me. For
the moment I am content... but will gleefully warm the tires of anyone
offering!!!
