>>I'd say the number one would be: A Top Fuel Hemi motor.
Yup its heavy... But it does make 15 to 30 times the horsepower of
anything on your list. It gets really poor gas mileage though. Doesn't
come with a warranty. Overheats backing out of the driveway. And WILL
wake your neighbors.<<
~~~~OK, I like the way you think here! But I got one for you, how about a
Buick V-6 in a Grand National, I know personally of several that produce in
excess of 700 HP, will run on pump gas, get about 16-20 mpg on the highway,
are kinda quiet, run 9-10 second quater miles in a 3400 lb car, and by the
way, the 13B and the Buick V-6 weigh about the same(trust me on this, I've
checked it out with evil intentions) and you can even drive it in traffic
with the A/C on.....don't believe me? come to Buicks at Bristol Sept 21-23
and see for yourself, I'll be willing to bet that there will be several of
these on hand and some will even have been driven to the track.
As for the displacement on the 13B, lets not forget that the rotors are
gear reduced so you don't have a complete revolution of the rotor in
coralation with the eccentric(crank) shaft, I think that the engine does work
pretty close to the 80 cid measurement, it gets alot of extra hp fron the
reduction of parisitic drag from not having to drive cams, lifters, timing
belts/chains and fight against valve springs; the biggest gain is in the
ultra-flat horsepower/torque curve that the engine produces.
All this said I should say that I like my little 13B NA 1st gen RX-7 alot
and just feel lucky that I understand how it actually works and that I can
actually build one...but I get more smile driving around in my good ol' big
block powered Buick SportWagon with 450 hp 520 ft/lbs torque(no nitrious,
it's for weenies) and beating more "traditional" performance cars on the
dragstrip.
Current rant finished,
"Buy what you want. Fix what you can. And remember, if you had all of the
money that you've spent on cars, you would spend it all on cars."
