Well, that's a good question. I guess the reasoning would be that since
the E30 M3 starts about 400 lb lighter than the E36 M3, that it could be
stripped down to a weight where it would be competitive with the CRXs. I
dunno.
And in dead stock form the E36 M3 is good for "only" low 14s at 96-97
mph with brutal launches on good concrete.
